How to create a strong password
Most hacked email accounts and websites are broken into because of a weak or reused password. A good password is the cheapest protection you have.
What makes a password strong
- Length beats complexity. Aim for 12 characters or more.
- A passphrase of four or more random words, such as three unrelated words plus a number and symbol, is long and easy to remember.
- Mix upper and lower case, numbers and at least one symbol if the system allows.
- Do not use names, birthdays, your domain name, “password” or keyboard patterns like
qwerty.
Rules to follow
- Use a different password for every account: each mailbox, cPanel, the Client Area and your website admin. If one leaks, the others stay safe.
- Store passwords in a password manager instead of a notebook, a file on your desktop or your email drafts.
- Never share a password by email, WhatsApp or over the phone.
- Change a password immediately if you think someone else has seen it.
Where to change them
- Mailboxes: How to change an email password
- Client Area: How to reset your Client Area password
- cPanel: use the Password & Security option in cPanel.
Tip
Password managers can also generate and fill long random passwords for you, so you only need to remember one strong master password.
