My website is down or shows an error
Work through these checks in order.
1. Is it just you?
Try the site on mobile data and on another device. If it works there, clear your browser’s cache or restart your router.
2. Is your domain active and pointing to AfterWave?
- Has the domain expired? See How domain renewals and expiry work.
- Did you recently change nameservers? Changes can take up to 24–48 hours. See Understanding DNS and nameservers.
3. Is the account active?
An unpaid invoice can lead to suspension. See What happens if an invoice is overdue. If your account was suspended for another reason we email you.
4. What error do you see?
| Error | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| 403 Forbidden | No home page file, or wrong file permissions. | Make sure index.html or index.php is in public_html. Folders should be 755 and files 644. |
| 404 Not Found | The page or file does not exist at that address. | Check the file name and spelling. Names are case-sensitive. |
| 500 Internal Server Error | A mistake in .htaccess or a PHP error. | Rename .htaccess to see if the site loads. Check the Errors page in cPanel. Try another PHP version: How to change your PHP version. |
| 503 Service Unavailable | The site is using too many resources, or the server is under maintenance. | Wait a few minutes and retry. If it keeps happening, tell us. |
| “Your connection is not private” | Certificate problem. | See SSL certificates and fixing “Not secure” warnings. |
5. Contact us
If it is still down, contact support with your domain name, the exact error message and what you changed last.
