How domain renewals and expiry work
How renewal works
A domain is registered for a period (usually one year) and has to be renewed before it expires. About a month before the renewal date we send a renewal invoice to the email address on your account. Once it is paid, we renew the domain with the registry.
What happens if you do not renew
- On the expiry date your website and email stop working.
- The registry gives a short period after expiry in which the domain can usually still be recovered, but this can cost extra and is not guaranteed.
- After that period the domain is released and anyone can register it.
Important
Renewing before the expiry date is by far the safest and cheapest option. Pay renewal invoices as soon as you receive them.
Do not want to keep it?
Simply do not pay the renewal invoice, or cancel the domain before the due date. See How to cancel a service. A domain that has already been renewed cannot be refunded.
Make sure our emails reach you
Renewal reminders go to your account email. Keep it up to date, and do not use an address on the domain that is about to expire. See How to update your contact details.
