How to upload your website files

Web HostingLast updated October 2026

Your website files go in the public_html folder. Whatever is in that folder is what visitors see at your main domain.

Using File Manager (easiest)

  1. Log in to cPanel (how to log in) and click File Manager.
  2. Open the public_html folder.
  3. Click Upload and select your files. A single .zip file is quickest; upload it, then right-click it and choose Extract.
  4. Make sure your home page is called index.html or index.php and sits directly inside public_html, not inside another folder.

Using FTP

  1. In cPanel open FTP Accounts and create an FTP account (or use your main account).
  2. In an FTP program such as FileZilla enter the host ftp.yourdomain.co.za (or your domain), your FTP username and password, and port 21.
  3. Drag your files into the public_html folder.
Tip
Before replacing an existing website, make a backup first.

If you visit your site and see an error afterwards, read My website is down or shows an error.
